"so here's the thing about people with deep political convictions: I don't trust them. I think that the more you think about an idea, the less sure you should become of it...the only way to determine a rational position that might actually accomplish something is not just to develop your ideas, but also to question the hell out of them. People with blind unwavering faith in a political ethos scare me as much as zealots of any other stripe. So I think that's why I can't get into any of the activist type stuff that people throw at me; the only ideal I really hold as sacred is human rights, and I have some serious doubts about the effectiveness of upper crust white kids printing out glossy workplace posters of afghan women in the grand scheme of the struggle for human decency. I believe in looking at immediate problems around you, examining them, and then working to solve them...it's not as glamourous as tossing a barrel through the window of a starbucks or getting in fights with skinheads, or marching on the washington mall to protest whatever the hell you're protesting, but in the long term it's the only way that anything can change.
